Hi, Ronnie – the backwards letters are just like the regular letters, but instead of being worth 1 point, the backwards E and S are worth -2 points.
E and S are two of the most common (and most “useful” letters). The E is often good for making words, since sometimes it’ll be your only vowel, and the S can often be used to extend words to the point where you can get a length bonus.
They’re not “desirable” cards, but they can also sometimes still be part of a very high scoring word.
